What is a Turkish towel?

Unlike the typical heavy looped terry towels we lug around beaches, or hang in our bathrooms, the Turkish towel (peshtemal  in Turkish) is created with a flat weave, without any loops.

This means it is a thinner, more lightweight textile – easy to roll up and fit into your beach bag - yet highly absorbent, soft and fast drying.

Say goodbye to damp smelly beach towels that take hours to dry - the Turkish beach towel can completely dry in less than 30 minutes on a sunny day. It’s flat weave also means that sand is easily shaken off and doesn’t stick to it.

The origins of the Turkish towel date back to the Ottoman Empire and the Turkish hammam bathing culture - that’s over 600 years ago!

Little has changed in the design and making of these towels, stretching back through generations of artisans. Making this the oldest design of towel.

The Turkish towel was created to be a lightweight towel that would gracefully cover and dry guests as they moved between steam rooms of the hammam baths - just imagine the royal Sultans and Sultanas lounging around the hammam baths, wrapped in these beautiful textiles.

The towels are made from some of the world’s highest quality natural cotton and linen that Turkey is renowned for producing – which is why they are so soft, supple yet so absorbent.

With its simplicity, practicality and versatility, the design of the Turkish towel has lasted for centuries. It was the perfect creation for the Turkish hammam baths, and is now the perfect modern beach towel!
